The iKAPP Rig has gone through several itterations over the course of the project. Each itteration has brought with it improvements and advancements on the previous version. The iterations have taken place for several reasons:

Improve the Robustness of the Rig
Modify for more suitable design
Reduce weight
Rebuild due to 'catastrophic failure' - i.e. dumping it in the ocean.

The development of the iKAPP rig has progressed significantly from iKAPP Rig 1 (a mear deadweight in comparison) to a very sophisticated iKAPP Rig 4 built from the latest in nano-itx technology, and using lightweight carbon fibre.

When developing a KAP platform weight is an important factor as the kite it is attached too must be able to lift the platform. The lighter the platform the smaller the kite needed and therefore the more portable the whole thing is.
